Fall 2015 Introduction!

Hello all!

What better opportunity to introduce myself than in my introduction post? Well, my name is Christine and I'm a sophomore here at the University of Oklahoma. I'm pre-pharmacy and I'm taking this class along with Microbiology and Organic Chemistry II, both with lab. Science classes are, of course, the majority of my classes that I have and will be taking for the remainder of my academic career but I always like to balance the sciences out with another non-science class I know I would enjoy. I came across this class while making my schedule last spring and thought it would be a good fit for me! This leads me into one of my favorite hobbies: writing. I absolutely love writing and if I was doing a four-year degree here it would have definitely been my minor. I've loved reading and writing and how they both give are able to create and display worlds in which people could relate to and get lost in. Aside from becoming a Pharmacist, I aspire to someday write books and maybe even become an author! So, this is one reason I thought this class would be a good fit for me. It gives me the ability and push to write more everyday in order to both try to improve my writing and provide me with an outlet to express myself.

Besides class, I'm the youngest of four and I'm full Nigerian (my parents were both born there, I was born in OKC,OK). I've traveled to Nigeria once when I was younger and it was quite an experience! It was my first ever plane ride and we went through Tennessee and Amsterdam. I loved getting to see more of my extended family and learn more about myself, culturally. Speaking of, the culture there really is beautiful and everyone there seems so close. I really enjoyed the atmosphere. I also got to see part of the Niger river so that was cool too!

My family is also extremely important to me. I wouldn't be where, or who, I am without their unconditional love and support. They're always willing to help me out when I need it and they're definitely my rock. My sister, who's only a year and half older than me, is basically my best friend. I think us being so close in age has really helped us to become as close as we are now. She's always there to laugh and cry with me and I relate to her more than anyone else. She truly has helped to guide me in the right direction and she never fails to give me great advice.

Something else about myself is that I also enjoy watching movies and television shows (my favorite genres are comedy, drama, romance and fantasy). Two of my all time favorite TV shows are The Office (U.S.) and Parks and Recreation. I love these shows because I know I can always count on them to give me a good laugh at any time.

Even though I haven't had time to do so, I love to sketch. I usually draw portraits, although I feel like it's been so long since I've done one. I would really like to get back into it and hopefully I will someday soon. It was a great way to relax and relieve stress. I always thought I might try to improve and do something with drawing but I think writing became more important to me along the way.

I hope this introduction gave everyone the chance to know me a little bit better. I'm thrilled to learn more about you guys, too!

  1. Oh, I am so glad to hear that this class can provide a creative writing outlet to balance your science classes, Christine - excellent! And The Office is so much fun: plus, it is a huge source of memes. Maybe you will want to make some memes to use in your blog posts with your favorite Office characters, or maybe you could even use them to inspire some stories. People have adapted myths and legends to all kinds of TV shows in this class... but never The Office! I bet that could be a really fun experiment! :-)

  3. Hi Christine! I am glad that you have a sense of humor (i.e. Parks and Rec, The Office)! You seem really down to Earth and I am excited to see your future posts since you are so into writing. Stay strong with the hard science classes, and I hope this class will become an outlet for you!

  4. Hi Christine!

I love The Office too! Who is your favorite character? I am, without a doubt, a huge fan of Jim, but Michael makes me laugh too. I must give you kudos for taking so many science classes! I find the content of science classes interesting, but it's not my preferred area of study. Now that you found a good mixture of hard and enjoyable classes, i'm sure it must make it easier to manage.

I wish you the best of luck this semester!

    1. Hi Christina! I would have to say I have two favorite characters, Jim and Dwight! Michael is definitely one of my favorites as well though!

  5. It's always nice to find people who love to write! Sometimes I feel like its becoming a lost art. Your intro reminded me a lot of my sister. She's going to school for engineering but has this deep seated love for writing (and hopes to one day become an author as well). I'm glad that you'll be able to express yourself in this class; it really is so different than other classes offered here!

  6. Hi Christine,
It’s a good idea to try and balance things out with your classes. It also helps because it keeps things fun and interesting. I 100% agree with you about reading and writing. They’re both such amazing things. Parks and Rec is such a funny show! My roommate from freshman year kept trying to get me to watch it for the longest time. I finally ended up watching it about a year ago and am so happy that I did.

  7. Hey Christine. I can totally relate to you with all the science classes. It can really suck the fun out of life when you don't have a creative outlet. I've been working in pharmacy for 8 years now but I don't think I want to become a pharmD. I wish you the best of luck in school.

What kind of writing do you enjoy most? Do you like to read too?

I haven't watched either of those tv shows regularly but I've caught a few episodes and it looks really funny. With work and school, and everything else, I just don't have much time for it. I'm going to have to do some serious netflix binge watching after graduation!

    1. I really like writing fiction and I've always found myself writing more towards the fantasy genre! I love to read, although I wish I had more time to do so! I read so much when I was younger and often I wish I could go back to those times

  8. Hi, Christine!

Your choice of favorite TV shows are awesome. They're hilarious! I'm pretty sure there's not a bad episode of The Office.

It sounds like you have a pretty full schedule with those science classes. I know someone who was pre-pharmacy and is now taking classes up in OKC for pharmacy and absolutely loves it! I hope you do, too!

Good luck with the rest of your semester and pursing pharmacy. I hope one day to read one of your published books!

  9. Hello!

I have so much respect for anyone who takes on a science-based major! I'm a psych major, and I sometimes feel so overwhelmed! I don't know how you do it. This class will probably be a welcome change of material for you!

I have so many friends that love watching the office. I am definitely going to have to check it out! Personally, I'm a Grey's Anatomy fan. I never had time to watch TV in high school, but now that I have a netflix I spend most of my time watching the dramatic shows! The Office would be a good change of pace.

It was so nice to read your intro, and I am looking forward to seeing more of your posts!

  10. Hi Christine!

I seriously have such a respect for people who enjoy both science and writing because often times people only like one or the other. Personally, I’ve always just been a writing and English person myself. I love The Office and Parks and Rec. Those are my go-to shows when I’m in a bad mood because they always cheer me up. Good luck this semester!

  11. Hi Christine! Nice to meet you. It's great to see you are in a medical career. I was in pre-med, but got out after the first semester. But I know how hard it is. So great job on that. Organic Chemistry always seemed so hard to me whenever I heard my friends talk about it. Again, it was great to read about you! Good luck and hope you do wonderful things with your career :)

  12. Hey there. You gals and your Office tv show haha. I'm more of a Workaholics fan. Or a Key and Peele fan. But to each his or her own! Gotta have something that makes us laugh or life would be very very dull. My roomie was doing pharmacy but he is much older than us. Gonna make that dough! I hope to visit Africa one day, what an experience. Remember not to study too hard and have fun every once in a while.

  13. Hi there! It looks like you have a busy schedule. Pharmacy is a great field to go into for sure! I worked as a pharmacy technician for about three years. I loved the people I worked with but it also helped me see how demanding it was, since I worked for a privately owned pharmacy and not a chain. What a sketch! I do good to draw stick people. It was nice to meet you and good luck in all of your classes!

  14. Hi Christine!

I would say nice to meet you, but I'm pretty sure you sit on my bench in Microbiology! How funny that we are both in the same class. You are pretty ahead for a sophomore I feel like. Most juniors are in OChem II and Microbiology that I know. That's awesome! I want to go to PA school, but I heard Pharmacy School is so cool too! My family is very important to me just like you, I think it is so cool that you get to share another culture in addition to American culture because of your parents and ancestors.

  15. Hi Christine!
That’s really cool that you were able to travel to Nigeria and learn more about your culture. I bet that was an awesome experience for you and your siblings! I love The Office as well. It is my favorite comedy series. Really nice artwork! You have got a lot of talent! Good luck with the rest of the semester!

  16. Hi Christine! Holy wow that portrait you drew is phenomenal! I wish I could draw like that. I also think it is awesome that you want to be a writer on top of a pharmacist. That is such an interesting combination because most of the people I know are either into like science or creative arts not both! I also think it is awesome that you got to go to Nigeria. I wish you the best of luck with the rest of this semester!

  17. It's so awesome to meet another writer! If you weren't already so far into your degree, I'd tell you to join my major: Professional Writing in the Gaylord College of Journalism! All we do is work on short stories and novels--it's seriously fun, or at least I think so!

Also, I love the Office and Parks and Recreation. I don't even know how many times I've seen it by now. I keep re-watching those shows, but they're still so funny.

You are such a great artist! You should absolutely keep that up. What I've found is that we cannot find times to do things, rather we must MAKE time to do things. So try to make time to write and draw. My bigest advice, one writer to another, is if you want to write books--then write! Make yourself write for a certain amount of time a day, I do it for one hour. Again, the idea that you must make time, because with our busy schedules, we will never find time.

Anyways, nice meeting you, and good luck with all your endeavors!

  18. Hi, Christine!

Wow, microbiology and organic chemistry *shudders*

I think it’s great that you can do science-y stuff –and– artistic stuff! That picture is just absolutely beautiful! I can draw critters, but I’m just absolutely stumped when it comes to drawing people, haha.

That’s cool that you were able to go to Nigeria to meet your family. It also sounds like your super close with your sister – family is so important! They help you stay grounded!

Parks and Rec is so great – that’s one of those shows I can put on repeat all day, haha!

Good luck with all your semester!

  19. Hi Christine!

I can't believe the semester is almost over and I am still reading new introductions from people in the class! Getting to read everyones introductions in the class is definitely my favorite part. I could see how this class would be a perfect fit for you since you like to write so much I bet you are enjoying it. 1 of 4? That is awesome, I say that because I am an only child and have always wished I had siblings. Hope the rest of your semester goes good in this class and all your others.

  20. Hi Christine,
I am a biology major and I too am in two science classes this year. I really appreciate this class for allowing me a little bit of a break from it. I am sure you feel the same too! I think it is really cool that you would like to be a writer as well. I have read some of your stories and you definitely have the talent for it.
